RAVEN STEALS THE LIGHT

This yellow cedar door, with a centre panel some 4 inches thick, depicts the familiar story of Raven stealing the light from the Skychief and, rather than surrendering his prize, releasing it into the sky above.

On the outside of the door, light is represented by Sunhawk, still in Raven’s beak. Below, representing the sea world is Killer Whale, gazing up to the new light in the sky. Beaver and Frog represent water and land together as they clamber toward the light. Land is fully represented by the Wolf also moving up toward the light. The sky creatures are represented by the little Hummingbird and the great Eagle above all.

The inside of this door reveals the same story in shallow (5/8″) relief, but with Raven’s light now expressed as stars flying out of his open beak with the moon in the night sky.
